Fianna Fáil candidate Jim Gavin has declared he is withdrawing from the Irish presidential election right away.

He was scheduled to be a candidate among three vying for the role of Irish president, alongside TD Catherine Connolly and Heather Humphreys of Fine Gael.

Yet, Sunday night he stated in a statement that he "erred inconsistent with his values and his personal standards."

"Considering all these factors, I've chosen to withdraw from the presidential race with immediate effect and go back to my family," he declared via a statement.
