British Foreign Office has placed eleven new nations to its travel warning roster about the risks of industrial alcohol contamination from tainted alcoholic drinks.

This expanded travel guidance now includes Bangladesh, India, Iran, Jordan, Libya, Malawi, Malaysia, Morocco, Nepal, Papua New Guinea, and Rwanda following evidence showing "a worldwide rise in the frequency of documented incidents" of methanol poisoning.

Just a few weeks ago, authorities had earlier included Ecuador, Japan, Kenya, Mexico, Nigeria, Peru, Russia, and Uganda to the existing roster, after a number of high-profile events such as the deadly demise of six tourists in Laos in 2024.

Travellers are being advised that as little as small amounts of industrial alcohol can result in permanent eye damage or loss of life within twelve to forty-eight hours.

Industrial alcohol is a poisonous chemical often utilized in antifreeze, car cleaning liquid, and thinner. This substance is not designed for drinking.
